Hey, wait a minute... Did they say "Fag Burning Amendment"?!?

Two areas of note today.

First, we were deliriously proud to discover that Alan Dechert, President of the Open Voting Consortium, kept his word and named us a founding member for helping with recruiting and disseminating information about its inception.

That's a badge we will wear very, very proudly. Mr. Dechert and company may well be instrumental in helping pull our federation back from the brink of fascism, if enough Americans start paying attention to what's really going on.

And, while we're at it, how about kicking in a few bucks to help with the cause -- building non-proprietary, open-to-public-scrutiny voting systems that can help ensure future elections aren't stolen. Your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar, and it's fully tax-refundable:

As for the second issue:

Am I the only one that feels like punching that (illegal cuban) cigar right the fuck out of Tom Delay's smug face?

See, therein lies the hypocrisy that makes me despise the more rabid proselytizers of the right: they advocate morality and Christianity and love for one's fellow man for us, but engage in drunkenness, reckless adultery , theft, cowardice lies, hatred, fraud, greed and advocate torture and murder.

Now, with an extremist, minority, they have begun to dictate the rights of the majority.

They are very organized

And the lower echelons are completely, scarily nuts.

But if you examine the phenomenon closely, there is a calculated cynicism on the part of the the leaders; the Delays, the Gingrinches, the Bakers, the Cheneys. They are patently insincere: for example, they knew without a shadow of a doubt that Iraq wasn't a threat, but they counted on being able to lie their way into the war anyway.

And here is the heart of their strategy in consolidating power: think of the pitiful saps that occasionally come to your door to share with you the glorious wisdom of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

They come in pairs for moral support, but basically have no shame whatsoever. Say what you will about them, they have the guts to sit there in front of you, knowing you don't give a damn about what they're saying and would rather tell them to fuck off and let you get about your day. And they wait you out.

They use the basic human instincts of extending common courtesy and play a waiting game. And they are not easily deterred; at age 15, as an experiment to drive them away, we answered the door nude, and invited them in for a chat. They stayed. And prayed. It was appalling, pitiful and gut-splittingly hilarious at the same time.

But we digress. Think of the average door-to-door proselytizer playing their waiting game, without giving in to shame or pressure and leaving when they're unwelcome.

These folks are steeped in it. They've been bred in that environment -- preaching to the unreceptive, and they don't mind if people recognize that they're asses.

And so we have John Poindexter and James Baker reappearing after the smoke settles; we have Oliver North collecting fat checks; we have Reagan nominated for inclusion in Mt. goddamned Rushmore.

These people have no shame. And they're happy to play a waiting game. That's why Tom Delay isn't sweating. He knows that eventually, all this will blow over and he can suck down another fat stogie, bought and paid for by your tax dollars and produced by cheap labor in a third world country the rabid right helped marginalize into utter destitution.

If the rest of America (that is, the non-extreme right) wants to effect change and stop this creeping, chilling fascism, we'd better realize that they can't be shamed out of office.

It's going to require serious confrontation and guts. We'll have to stay constantly in their faces with subpoenas, cameras, massive public demonstrations and, especially, international pressure.

Their achilles heel is their greed. If we can stop the massive flow of money into the Right's movement, they can be stopped.

Here's hoping.

Quote of the Day: I hate those men who would send into war youth to fight and die for them; the pride and cowardice of those old men, making their wars that boys must die.
Mary Roberts Rinehart
